Andaman to Transform into a Luxury Tourism Hub with 5-Star Resorts and Yacht Marina
The Andaman and Nicobar Islands are set for a major tourism overhaul, with new luxury resorts and a yacht marina planned to attract global visitors.
Andaman and Nicobar Islands is preparing for a comprehensive tourism transformation, with plans for five-star resorts, a yacht marina, and a focus on eco-tourism and sustainable development. Chandra Bhushan Kumar, the Chief Secretary of the Islands, outlined an ambitious roadmap that aims to elevate the region to international tourism standards while preserving its natural and historical legacy.
Key Components of the Tourism Overhaul
The plan focuses on the development of both infrastructure and heritage tourism, with significant projects already in motion:
- Five-Star Resorts: Four luxury resorts will be constructed on select islands, bringing premium hospitality services to attract high-end tourists.
- Yacht Marina: A new marina will cater to cruise tourism and private yachts, enhancing the Islands’ appeal as a luxury travel destination.
- Heritage Promotion: Efforts are underway to secure UNESCO World Heritage Site status for the Cellular Jail, alongside creating immersive tourist circuits that connect key historical sites like Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose Island and Viper Island.
Eco-Tourism and Water Sports
Recognizing the Islands’ unique natural beauty, which accounts for over 25% of India’s coastline, the administration is focusing on promoting eco-adventures and water sports. Activities like scuba diving, snorkelling, and game fishing will be expanded with professional operators and enhanced safety regulations. Additionally, astro-tourism will take advantage of the region’s unpolluted skies, offering unique stargazing experiences.

Tourism Growth and Future Projections
The tourism department reported a significant increase in visitor numbers over the last three years:
- 2022: 2,35,061 domestic and 4,461 foreign tourists.
- 2023: 3,23,619 domestic and 9,025 foreign tourists.
- 2024: 7,10,397 domestic and 11,497 foreign tourists.
The expected surge in tourist arrivals for 2025 is over 25%, driven by the new infrastructure developments and targeted promotion efforts.
