Where horses once raced to gunshots and jockeys won hands down to the merriment and relief of the elite race-loving patrons, there will now be a cycle track too, albeit not for racing but recreational purposes nevertheless.
BMC will add a 4-kilometer-long cycling track to the outer periphery of the Mahalaxmi Race Course by the end of 2022. Personally, we have been noticing a lot of cyclists on the streets lately and this seems to be the civic authority’s way of making this greener way of living more convenient and safe. Multiple cycling tracks are planned throughout the city by the BMC and MMRDA for exactly this reason.
Of course, the 225-acre popular spot in SoBo also has immense aesthetic appeal to the city-worn eyes of the residents and the cycle track will also serve to provide them picturesque bicycle rides with a view of the racecourse at all times.
A Rs. 7-crore initiative to return to non-motorised transport is the right thing to do, given the environmental crisis. We will be ready with our bicycles to try such safe cycling places across the city hoping to bump into you too.
