Having a large population and growing meat lovers day by day provided the option to go for commercial goat farming throughout India. There are many goat breeds available in India depending on the geographical location. However, in this article, let us discuss popular goat breeds and their profiles, characteristics, and performances. The goat rearing in India is helping urban areas as this is very profitable and anybody can start from the low investment.

  • This Goat Breed is mainly found in Maharashtra and neighboring states of Telangana and Karnataka.
  • Osmanabadi goat coat color is predominantly black. However, sometimes white, brown and spotted will be found.
  • These goats are the long and short-haired type, based on the presence or absence of long hair on the thighs and hindquarters.
  • This goat has a tall and large size body and legs.
  • This goat breed birth weight is about 2.5 kg.
  • Usually, Osmanabadi goats give birth once a year.
  • Fist kidding can happen at the age of 18 to 20 months and twinning is very common and triplets are possible.
  • The Osmanabadi breed is raised for both meat and milk. The average milk yield is about 3 to 3.5 kg/day/goat.

  • This goat breed is largest of the long-legged goats available in India.
  • This breed mostly is seen in white color and black markings at ears and neck.
  • Both males (bucks) and females (does) are beard and will possess long hairs on buttocks.
  • This breed has short & flat horns which are horizontally twisting backward.
  • When it comes to the height, this breed adult male goats will reach the height up to 100 cm whereas an adult female goat will attain the height up to 75 cm.
  • This breed matured adult male goats will weigh about 65 to 75 kg whereas an adult matured female goat will weigh about 45 to 60 kg.
  • This breed is very tall and leggy with a convex face and large folded pendulous ears. The ears of these goats are large and drooped downwards.
