Key Tech Announcements This Week: Google, OpenAI, and Meta Lead the Charge

This week has been buzzing with major tech announcements that you definitely don’t want to miss. From Google’s event dates to new AI developments and Meta’s AI rollout in India, here’s a rundown of the top four announcements in the tech space.

1. Meta AI’s India Debut

Meta has officially launched its AI chatbot, the Meta AI assistant, in India. This AI assistant is now available through Meta’s suite of apps, including Messenger, Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, and a dedicated website at Meta.AI. Initially introduced over two months ago, Meta AI has already been rolled out in Australia, Canada, and New Zealand. The delay in its Indian debut is speculated to be due to the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.

Meta AI will provide real-time search results from Google and Microsoft, enhancing user interactions on Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, and Messenger. Users can leverage Meta AI for tasks like trip planning and finding the least congested routes, and it will also offer insights while browsing Facebook posts.

2. Google Translate Expands Indian Language Support

Google has significantly expanded its Google Translate service, adding support for 110 new languages. This update, the largest in the service’s history, now brings the total to 243 languages. The new additions include seven Indian languages: Awadhi, Santali, Bodo, Khasi, Kokborok, Marwadi, and Tulu.

This expansion was made possible by Google’s in-house PaLM 2 large language model (LLM), which used artificial intelligence (AI) to learn new languages, focusing particularly on related languages and regional dialects.

3. OpenAI’s CriticGPT

OpenAI has unveiled a new AI model, CriticGPT, designed to find and fix errors in code generated by GPT-4. Using the reinforcement learning from human feedback (RLHF) framework, CriticGPT blends human input with machine output to enhance AI systems.

While CriticGPT is still a work in progress and not yet available to users or testers, initial testing has shown promising results. Users employing CriticGPT to review ChatGPT-generated code performed better 60% of the time compared to those who did not use the model. OpenAI has detailed these findings in a recently released study.

4. Made by Google 2024 Event Details

Google has announced that its “Made by Google 2024” event will take place earlier than usual, on August 13. Traditionally held in October, this year’s event has been moved up by two months, sparking excitement and speculation about early product releases, particularly the highly anticipated Pixel 9 series.

The event will be held at Google’s headquarters in Mountain View, California, starting at 10 AM PT (10:30 PM IST). While specific details about the livestream have not been revealed, the early announcement has heightened expectations. The event is expected to feature updates on “Google AI, Android software, and the Pixel portfolio of devices,” hinting at the unveiling of the Pixel 9 Pro XL and Pixel 9 Pro. A brief 12-second teaser video has already been released to quell rumors about the Pixel 9 Pro’s launch.
