Amid US pressure on India’s oil imports from Russia, Putin signals stronger economic ties and praises Modi’s leadership at international forum.
Russia Seeks to Address Trade Imbalance with India
In a bid to rebalance trade ties, Russian President Vladimir Putin has proposed increasing imports of agricultural products, pharmaceuticals, and medicinal goods from India. The announcement was made at the Valdai Discussion Club, a prominent international conference in Russia.
- Putin stated: “More agricultural products may be purchased from India. Certain steps can be undertaken from our side for medicinal products, pharmaceuticals.”
- The move comes in the wake of mounting pressure from the United States, particularly former President Donald Trump, urging India to halt oil imports from Russia.
Deep Trade Gap: Crude Oil at the Core
India-Russia bilateral trade stood at $68.7 billion in FY25. However, the relationship is marked by a severe imbalance:
- India’s exports to Russia: $4.88 billion
- India’s imports, mainly crude oil: $63.84 billion
To correct the disparity, Putin has reportedly instructed the Russian government to develop a roadmap to facilitate larger imports of Indian goods.
- Top export categories from India include fish, shrimp, rice, tea, tobacco, pharmaceuticals, machinery, iron and steel, and surgical tools.
Energy and Sovereignty: India’s Oil Gamble Pays Off
Putin acknowledged that India’s decision to continue oil imports from Russia, despite Western sanctions and pressure, saved the country $9–10 billion.
- He emphasized that halting Russian energy would have led to significant economic losses for India.
- The Russian leader positioned India’s stance as one of strategic autonomy and national interest.
“The losses faced by India due to punitive US tariffs would be balanced by crude imports from Russia, plus it will gain prestige as a sovereign nation,” he noted.
Putin’s Praise for Modi and Indo-Russian Ties
Putin took the opportunity to publicly endorse Prime Minister Narendra Modi, calling him a “balanced, wise, and nationally oriented” leader.
- He described their relationship as personal and trustworthy, adding: “We have never had any problems or interstate tensions with India. Never.”
- Putin also praised India’s refusal to bow to external political pressure, positioning it as an example of sovereign decision-making in global affairs.
The Road Ahead: Opportunity for Indian Exporters
Putin’s remarks signal potential economic openings for Indian agriculture and pharmaceutical sectors, which could benefit from:
- Preferential access to the Russian market
- Diversification of export destinations amid global supply chain shifts
- Increased bilateral cooperation in food security and healthcare
If followed through, this strategy could narrow the current trade gap while reinforcing India’s position as a reliable trade partner to Russia.
