Amid viral social media claims of a visa suspension, Bangladesh’s envoy clarifies that no official UAE directive bans Bangladeshi nationals from tourist or work visas.
Social Media Stir Sparks Clarification
A wave of social media reports claiming that the UAE suspended work and tourist visas for several countries, including Bangladesh, has been met with strong denial by Bangladesh’s Ambassador to the UAE, Tareq Ahmed.
- The ambassador dismissed the rumors as “inauthentic” and “fake news.”
- He told Bangladesh’s NTV and Khaleej Times that no new directives had been issued by UAE authorities regarding a visa ban on Bangladeshis.
These unverified reports had caused confusion among expatriate communities and sparked concern among families and jobseekers alike.
Nearly a Million Bangladeshis in the UAE
Bangladeshis form one of the largest expatriate groups in the UAE. Estimates range from 0.84 million (Global Media Insight) to around 1 million, as stated by Md. Rashedujjaman, the Consul-General of Bangladesh in Dubai and the Northern Emirates.
- They comprise approximately 7.4% of the UAE’s population, ranking third after Indians and Pakistanis.
- The community plays a significant role in various sectors, including construction, services, and small business operations.
Both Bangladeshi diplomats reaffirmed their commitment to improving visa processes and enhancing bilateral cooperation with the UAE.
“No Visa Ban” – But Caution Remains
While Bangladesh officials denied any official ban, other nations reportedly face visa restrictions. As per circulating reports, the nine affected countries allegedly include:
- Afghanistan, Libya, Yemen, Somalia, Lebanon, Cameroon, Sudan, Uganda, and Bangladesh.
- With Bangladesh denying the ban, the list now potentially includes eight nations.
Notably, Uganda’s Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Oryem Henry Okello, confirmed the development, citing concerns over visa overstays and unlawful activities.
“It is not a blanket prohibition,” he clarified. “Some people will still go, but it will be based on the risk of overstaying or violating UAE laws and culture.”
Looking Ahead: Building Trust and Opportunity
Despite the rumors, dialogue between Bangladesh and the UAE continues. Consul-General Rashedujjaman noted ongoing efforts to streamline visa approvals and further integrate Bangladeshi nationals into the UAE’s growth story.
- The UAE remains a vital destination for Bangladeshi workers and professionals.
- Officials on both sides appear focused on cooperation, not confrontation.
“We want to see Bangladeshi nationals become a part of the UAE’s success story,” said Rashedujjaman, underlining the positive trajectory of bilateral relations.
