In 2013, the Buddh International Circuit hosted the last Formula 1 Indian Grand Prix, the first major international event in India. Telangana, Formula E, and clean energy company Greenko signed a Letter of Intent earlier this year, making Hyderabad a candidate for hosting a Formula E race next season. Formula E’s chief championship officer Alberto Longo expressed confidence that the race would go ahead despite this not guaranteeing the city a spot on the calendar. Concrete plans for the race are now confirmed.
Round 4 of Season 9 will take place in Hyderabad, ushering in a new era of Formula E featuring the fastest, most powerful and most sustainable cars yet. Maserati and McLaren will also be racing this year alongside existing manufacturers Mahindra Racing, Jaguar, DS Automobiles, Nissan, Porsche and NIO 333.
An official Formula E statement stated, “Two major motorsport fanbases will welcome E-Prix for the first time. Round 4 of the championship will be held in Hyderabad, India, on February 11, while fans in Brazil will see the São Paulo E-Prix on March 25 for Round 7.”
Hyderabad street track details
The 2.37km track was designed by Driven International and worked on the latest updates to the Yas Marina Circuit in Abu Dhabi. The firm is working on other projects in India as well, notably the Nanoli Speedway near Pune and Marque One Motor Club in Andhra Pradesh.
Lumbini Park is located next to Hussain Sagar Lake, where the track winds through. Dilbagh Gill, Mahindra Racing’s CEO and team principal, said it was an ideal location earlier this year. “While it’s a city race, we are not disrupting public life because there’s no civilian residence in the track area,” he explained. He’d also revealed that organisers are looking to host the Hyderabad E-Prix in the evening under lights.
Two rounds of the inaugural Formula Regional Indian Championship will be held at the track in November and December, along with F4 India and the Indian Racing League.
Formula E Season 9 calendar
According to the newly released provisional calendar, the Gen3 cars will make their competitive debut at the Mexico City E-Prix on January 14. Between January and July 2023, 18 races are planned in 13 cities around the world.
