Translating Web Pages in Chrome, Firefox, and Edge: A Step-by-Step Guide

How to Translate a Web Page

Read a web page in English using Chrome, Firefox, and Edge

What to Know

  • In Chrome: Click the Translate This Page icon > English or another language.
  • In Edge: Click the Show Translation Options icon > Translate.
  • In Firefox: Install the Translate Web Pages add-on. Click its icon > Translate.

This guide explains how to translate web pages into English (or any other language) using Chrome, Firefox, and Microsoft Edge browsers.

How to Translate a Page in Chrome

If you’ve found a web page in a language you’re not familiar with, Chrome makes it easy to translate it into your preferred language.

  1. Open the web page you want to translate in Chrome.
  2. Translate This Page Icon: In the address bar, click the Translate This Page icon. This icon appears automatically if Chrome detects the page is in a different language.
  3. Select Language: In the pop-up menu, click “English” or choose another language from the options.

The text on the page will now appear in the selected language. To have Chrome always translate pages in this language, check the box for “Always translate”. For more options, including changing the language, click the three dots to open the Translate menu.

How to Translate in Microsoft Edge

Edge also offers a straightforward way to translate web pages:

  1. Open the web page you want to translate in Microsoft Edge.
  2. Translation Options Icon: Click the Show Translation Options icon in the address bar. This icon appears if Edge detects the page is in a different language than your default.
  3. Translate: The drop-down menu should automatically select your primary language. Click “Translate” to convert the page text.

If you want to choose a different language, use the “Translate To” drop-down menu. To always translate pages in this language, check the box for “Always translate pages from”.

How to Translate a Page on Firefox

Firefox doesn’t have a built-in translation feature, so you need to use an add-on. Here’s how:

  1. Open Firefox: Click the three horizontal lines at the top right to open the menu.
  2. Add-ons: Select “Add-ons” from the drop-down menu.
  3. Search for Add-ons: In the search bar, type “translation” and press Enter.
  4. Install an Add-on: Choose a translation add-on. “Translate Web Pages” is a recommended choice as it uses Google’s translation engine. Click “Add to Firefox”.

Once installed, you’ll see an icon for the add-on next to the search box. To translate a page, hover over the icon and click “Translate this page”. The web page text will now appear in the selected language.

By following these steps, you can easily translate web pages across different browsers, ensuring you understand the content regardless of the original language.
