Google Introduces Reverse Phone Number Search on Phone App for Pixel Phones

In a significant enhancement for Pixel phone users, Google has introduced a reverse phone search feature named Lookup on the Phone app. This new functionality is part of Pixel’s June Feature Drop update, allowing users to identify unsaved numbers in their call directory without the need for third-party apps.

Google Lookup: How It Works

The Lookup feature simplifies the process of identifying unknown callers. When receiving an incoming call from an unsaved number, users can tap the expand option on the phone app screen. This reveals several options, including “Lookup,” alongside “Add contact,” “Messages,” and “History.” By tapping the Lookup button, the phone number, complete with the country code, is automatically entered into Google Search. This eliminates the need to copy and paste numbers between different apps.

Device Compatibility and Availability

Google has confirmed that the Lookup feature will be available on Pixel 6 and newer models, including the Pixel Fold. This means all Pixel smartphones equipped with a Tensor chip will support this new functionality. However, it’s important to note that Lookup will only work for phone numbers listed in public databases, such as business contact numbers, and not for private phone numbers.

Currently, the feature is available on most Pixel devices and can be found in the Google Phone app version 132, which is in beta. The exact date for the full rollout to all Pixel users remains unclear.

Accessing the Feature

One of the convenient aspects of the Lookup feature is that it does not require users to manually update their phones or be on the June Feature Drop and security patch. As it is a server-side update, the feature will be enabled automatically for eligible devices.

Initial Release and Future Rollout

The Lookup feature was first introduced to Google Pixel owners in Japan. Its broader availability is now being extended to more regions, offering enhanced caller identification capabilities to a larger user base.

With this update, Google continues to improve the user experience for Pixel phone owners, providing innovative solutions to common problems such as identifying unknown callers.
